As 2024 draws to a close, we’re delighted to feature this guest blog from Adam Sroka, CEO of Hypercube and a valued member of The Data Lab’s Innovation Advisory Board. Adam reflects on a transformative year for Hypercube – one marked by their first office move, rapid team expansion, and groundbreaking projects in the energy sector. Their journey showcases the power of ambition, collaboration, and adaptability in driving success.
At the start of 2024, Hypercube was a four-person operation with big dreams but modest means. Now, as the year comes to a close, we’re rapidly approaching a team of 30. It’s bonkers to think how far we’ve come. This year has been a whirlwind of growth, challenges, and incredible milestones that have redefined what Hypercube is – and what it can become.
Finding our space
One of the scariest but most rewarding decisions this year was signing the lease for our first office on St. Vincent Street in Glasgow. As a bootstrap business, every financial commitment carries weight, and this one felt monumental. The space was bigger than we were and represented a bold leap of faith. But it turned out to be the right call.
The office has become more than a workspace; it’s a hub for collaboration, creativity, and connection. Clients love visiting, and the team has embraced it as our home base. Looking back, I can’t imagine this year without that move. It’s a testament to trusting the process and making decisions that align with your vision, even when they’re daunting.
Building a dream team
Perhaps the most humbling part of this journey has been the people. As a founder, there’s always that niggling doubt – will others believe in this as much as you do? The early days were tough, trying to convince people to join when we were just an idea on the rise.
I once read that the best early hires are people who could have better options elsewhere but choose your startup because they believe in its potential. That’s been the case for Hypercube. As we attracted a few key people, the momentum snowballed. Now, we’ve got a superstar leadership team, and the calibre of talent across the board is awe-inspiring.
One of the absolute highlights of 2024 has been working alongside Iain Cherry, Hypercube’s COO and the person who ensures everything runs like clockwork. His patience and professionalism are unmatched, and he has this incredible ability to make me a better founder and leader. From the moment he decided to join Hypercube, I knew we were destined for success – it was a turning point that gave me confidence in our vision. Iain has been instrumental in shaping Hypercube into what it is today, ensuring every part of the business hums to the same tune. He’s a saint, a constant source of inspiration, and someone I’m deeply grateful to work with every day.
The most surreal part? The company has outgrown me. Tasks that once took me hours are now handled swiftly – and better – by the team. It’s no longer “the Adam show”; it’s Hypercube’s show. Seeing our collective vision evolve and flourish is the greatest privilege of my career.
Cool projects, cooler clients
This year has seen us deliver some of our most exciting projects to date. From building virtual power plants to supporting domestic flexibility services and solving deeply technical challenges for industry leaders, we’ve pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in the energy sector.
It’s incredibly rewarding to help organisations at different stages – whether they’re seasoned players or just starting out in the energy sector – navigate complex problems and achieve meaningful outcomes. The positive feedback we’ve received is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone on the team.
Moments that matter
Beyond the projects and milestones, 2024 has been filled with moments that truly matter. Whether it’s team socials complete with piñatas and cupcakes – baked by our cupcake connoisseur and Operations Director, Ken Starbuck – or watching our podcast and marketing efforts hit new heights, these moments remind me why I started Hypercube in the first place.
A mentor once told me that your greatest impact as a leader isn’t just in the projects you deliver but in the lives you touch. Creating a workplace where people solve challenging problems, grow in their careers, and genuinely enjoy themselves has been my ultimate goal. When I see the team buzzing with excitement about our work and culture, I know we’re on the right track.
Looking ahead
As we gear up for 2025, there’s a lot to be excited about. We’ve launched our talent offering, Hypercube Talent, which we believe could be truly disruptive, and we’re preparing to open a second office in a new geography. Big things are brewing with “Project Flamingo”… Stay tuned for more on that!
This year has been a wild ride, but it’s only the beginning. To the Hypercube team, our clients, and our community, thank you for making 2024 unforgettable. And to The Data Lab – happy 10th anniversary! Thank you for being part of our journey, for fostering a community that supports innovation, and for celebrating milestones like this. Here’s to many more years of collaboration and success.
Bring on 2025.
