  • The Chief Information and Financial Officer at the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA), Nic Granger OBE, is the new chair of The Data Lab Governance Board.
  • Replaces Les Bayne, whose four-year tenure in the role ends in December.

Scotland’s innovation centre for data and AI, The Data Lab, has today announced that Nic Granger OBE will assume the role of chair.

Granger joins the centre as it continues to drive innovation, promote collaboration across sectors and industries, support skills development, and champion Scotland’s data and AI ecosystem by fostering community.

Having worked internationally and in the UK across various sectors, in her executive role as Chief Information and Financial Officer for the North Sea Transition Authority, Granger currently leads an award-winning, diverse team delivering services in data, information, and digital solutions to enable and support strategic decisions that accelerate the energy transition.

She is also Chair of the Offshore Energy Digital Strategy Group, a trustee for CAST, the Centre for Acceleration of Social Technology, a board member and Chair of the Risk, Audit & Finance Committee of BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, and a board member for the Bat Conservation Trust. Granger was previously Chair of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales Tech Board, a trustee for Falklands Conservation and a senior civil servant for the Falkland Islands Government. She was awarded an OBE in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours list for services to digital transformation.

Heather Thomson, CEO of The Data Lab, commented:

“The last five years have seen continued acceleration in technological advancements, particularly in AI, increasing the need for digital, data and AI literacy. Scotland has a unique opportunity to harness the power of data and AI to drive inclusive economic growth, benefit society, close the skills gap, and lead in responsible innovation, and The Data Lab is well equipped to support in achieving this ambition across industries and sectors.

“Nic is a champion of digital transformation with a strong portfolio in governance. Given her breadth of experience, I am confident that she will steer The Data Lab’s bold ambitions to continue generating economic and societal impact, supporting responsible data-driven innovation and AI adoption and growing as an organisation aligned and contributing to national priorities.”

Granger added:

“I’m excited to be taking on the role of Chair of The Data Lab Governance Board at a time when the responsible use of data and AI is central to creating a connected society and strong economy. Scotland has a unique opportunity to harness the power of data and AI to drive inclusive economic growth, close the skills gap, and lead in responsible innovation.

“As an active member and mentor in The Data Lab Community for many years, I have long admired The Data Lab’s work.  I look forward to working closely with Heather, the board and the wider team to evolve our strategy and ensure that The Data Lab continues to deliver impact that changes lives and helps to boost Scotland’s economy”

Granger replaces Les Bayne, who has held the chair role since 2021. Thomson added:

“During his time as chair, Les has brought a great deal of expertise and continues to champion the vision and act as an ambassador, and we wish him all the best for the future.”
