Practical, one-to-one help to boost efficiency, cut costs, and build confidence with data and AI
Scotland’s manufacturing and production-based SMEs face rising costs, skills pressures and the need to stay competitive while cutting carbon. Our Hands-on data and AI support offers short, practical projects designed to help you uncover opportunities, improve efficiency, and build lasting confidence in using data and AI. Work directly with data and AI experts to explore solutions tailored to your business – from simple dashboards to predictive tools – that can deliver quick, measurable results.
How it works
Each project runs over a few weeks with two-to-five days of expert support from The Data Lab. The process is simple and collaborative, and focused on our business priorities:
- Discover and scope – identify your business challenge and available data.
- Collect and analyse – use secure, cloud-based tools and existing data (spreadsheets, logs, sensors).
- Prototype and test – create lightweight proofs of concept, from simple dashboards, to predictive analytics.
- Get clear recommendations – receive practical action plan and ‘build or not-build’ advice.
- Capture impact and next steps – measure results and identify future opportunities.
Who it’s for
This support is open to Scottish SMEs and social enterprises – particularly in manufacturing (engineering, food and drink, or life sciences) – looking to use data and AI to work smarter.
You don’t need in-house data expertise, just accessible data (or willingness to install a simple sensor) and a clear business challenge to tackle.
Priority will be given to rural SMEs, businesses supporting marginalised communities, and organisations in foundational or traditional sectors.
How you’ll benefit
Typical results include:
- 5-15% efficiency improvements within months.
- £5,000-£10,000 annual cost savings.
- Greater visibility of operations and data-driven decision-making.
- Confidence, tools, and skills to take the next step with AI.
You’ll also gain access to expert consultancy and insights from The Data Lab’s team – trusted, practical specialists at the heart of Scotland’s AI ecosystem.
How to apply
To take part, businesses must:
- Commit staff time to manage and collaborate on the project.
- Agree to secure data-sharing if required.
- Ensure senior leadership backing.
Participation is subject to an eligibility check. Spaces are limited and may be allocated on a first-come basis.

Duration
Each engagement is short and focused, typically lasting a few weeks in total with two-to-five days of expert input. The exact timeline depends on your goals and the type of project.
